BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) plays a significant role in morbidity, mortality, and economic cost in the Belt and Road Initiative ("B and R") countries. In addition, these countries have a substantial consumption of processed meat. However, the burden and trend of CRC in relation to the consumption of a diet high in processed meat (DHPM-CRC) in these "B and R" countries remain unknown. AIM: To analyze the burden and trend of DHPM-CRC in the "B and R" countries from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: We used the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study to collate information regarding the burden of DHPM-CRC. Numbers and age-standardized rates (ASRs) of deaths along with the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were determined among the "B and R" countries in 1990 and 2019. Using joinpoint regression analysis, the average annual percent change (AAPC) was used to analyze the temporal trends of age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDALR) from 1990 to 2019 and in the final decade (2010-2019). RESULTS: We found geographical differences in the burden of DHPM-CRC among "B and R" countries, with the three highest-ranking countries being the Russian Federation, China, and Ukraine in 1990, and China, the Russian Federation, and Poland in 2019. The burden of DHPM-CRC generally increased in most member countries from 1990 to 2019 (all P < 0.05). The absolute number of deaths and DALYs in DHPM-CRC were 3151.15 [95% uncertainty interval (UI) 665.74-5696.64] and 83249.31 (95%UI 15628.64-151956.31) in China in 2019. However, the number of deaths (2627.57-2528.51) and DALYs (65867.39-55378.65) for DHPM-CRC in the Russian Federation has declined. The fastest increase in ASDALR for DHPM-CRC was observed in Vietnam, Southeast Asia, with an AAPC value of 3.90% [95% confidence interval (CI): 3.63%-4.16%], whereas the fastest decline was observed in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, with an AAPC value of -2.05% (95% CI: -2.37% to -1.73%). A substantial upward trend in ASR of mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and DALYs from DHPM-CRC changes in 1990-2019 and the final decade (2010-2019) for most Maritime Silk Route members in East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East, as well as Central Europe, while those of the most Land Silk Route members in Central Asia and Eastern Europe have decreased markedly (all P < 0.05). The ASDALR for DHPM-CRC increased more in males than in females (all P < 0.05). For those aged 50-74 years, the ASDALR for DHPM-CRC in 40 members exhibited an increasing trend, except for 20 members, including 7 members in Central Asia, Maldives, and 12 high or high-middle social development index (SDI) members in other regions (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The burden of DHPM-CRC varies substantially across "B and R" countries and threatens public health. Relevant evidence-based policies and interventions tailored to the different trends of countries in SDIs or Silk Routes should be adopted to reduce the future burden of CRC in "B and R" countries via extensive collaboration.

Screening programmes are important for early diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) but they are not equally efficient in all locations. Depending on which hospital people belong to, they often are not willing to follow up even after a positive result, resulting in a lower-than-expected overall detection rate. Improved allocation of health resources would increase the program's efficiency and assist hospital accessibility. A target population exceeding 70,000 people and 18 local hospitals were included in the investigation of an optimization plan based on a locationallocation model. We calculated the hospital service areas and the accessibility for people in communities to CRC-screening hospitals using the Huff Model and the Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) approach. We found that only 28.2% of the residents with initially a positive screening result had chosen followup with colonoscopy and significant geographical differences in spatial accessibility to healthcare services indeed exist. The lowest accessibility was found in the Southeast, including the Zhangjiang, Jichang and Laogang communities with the best accessibility mainly distributed near the city centre of Lujiazui; the latter also had relatively a high level of what is called "ineffective screening" as it represents wasteful resource allocation. It is recommended that Hudong Hospital should be chosen instead of Punan Hospital as the optimization, which can improve the service population of each hospital and the populations served per colonoscope. Based on our results, changes in hospital configuration in colorectal cancer screening programme are needed to achieve adequate population coverage and equitable facility accessibility. Planning of medical services should be based on the spatial distribution trends of the population served.

To estimate the relationship among the cesarean delivery (CD), mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants weighing less than 1500 g. This retrospective cohort study enrolled 242 VLBW infants delivered between the 24 to 31week of gestation from 2015 to 2021. We compared CD with vaginal delivery (VD). The primary outcome was a composite neonatal morbidity including bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, necrotizing enterocolitis, late-onset sepsis and retinopathy of prematurity. The secondary outcome included mortality within 28 days. A multivariate logistic regression was used and adjusted for birthweight, twin pregnancy and antenatal steroids intake. The overall CD rate was 80.6%. Compared with VD, a significantly lower composite neonatal morbidity was associated with CD (adjusted odds ratio, 0.33, 95% confidence interval, 0.12-0.90, P = .031). The relationship between CD and neonatal morbidity disappeared when the VLBW infants were stratified according to the gestational age. No significant difference was observed between the VD and CD cohorts regarding mortality. Compared with VD, CD was associated with a lower morbidity in VLBW infants. Further studies are required to clarify how this association is influenced by gestational age.

Peer victimization is a serious risk factor for the development of problematic social media use (PSMU) among adolescents. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. The current study tested whether psychological insecurity mediated the relation between peer victimization and PSMU, and whether this mediating process was moderated by family support among adolescents. A large sample of 1506 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.74 years, SD = 0.98) completed self-report measures regarding peer victimization, psychological insecurity, family support, and PSMU. After controlling for age, gender, and family economic status, results indicated that increased peer victimization was associated with higher psychological insecurity, which in turn predicted a greater incidence of PSMU. Moreover, family support moderated the first part of the mediation process, such that the relation between peer victimization and psychological insecurity was exacerbated for adolescents with high family support. This study advanced the current understanding of the mediating and moderating mechanisms associating peer victimization with PSMU among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve as key regulators in tumor development and progression. However, only a few lncRNAs have been functionally characterized in gastric cancer (GC). METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis was conducted to find lncRNAs that are associated with GC metastasis. RNA FISH, RIP, and RNA pull down assays were used to study the complementary binding of LINC01564 complementary to the 3'UTR of transcription factor POU2F1. The transcription activation of LINC01564 by POU2F1 as a transcription factor was examined by ChIP assay. In vitro assays such as MTT, cell invasion assay, and clonogenic assay were conducted to examined the impacts of LINC01564 and POU2F1 on GC cell proliferation and invasion. Experiments in vivo were performed to access the impacts of LINC01564 and POU2F1 on GC metastasis. RESULTS: The results showed that LINC01564 complementary bound to the 3'UTR of POU2F1 to form an RNA duplex, whereby stabilizing POU2F1 mRNA and increasing the enrichment in cells. The level of LINC01564 was also increased by POU2F1 through transcription activation. In vitro assays showed that LINC01564 promoted the proliferation, invasion and migration of GC cells through increasing POU2F1. In vivo experiments indicate the promotion of GC proliferation and metastasis by the interaction between LINC01564 and POU2F1. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our results indicate that the interaction between LINC01564 and POU2F1 promotes the proliferation, migration and invasion of GC cells.

Bioactive glass (BG) has been regarded as an excellent candidate for biomedical applications due to its superior properties of bioactivity, biocompatibility, osteoconductivity and biodegradability. Thus, in this study, we aimed to fabricate drug carriers that were capable of loading therapeutic antibiotics while promoting bone regeneration using macroporous BG microspheres, prepared by a spray drying method. Characterizations of particle morphology and specific surface area were carried out via scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. Evaluations of in vitro bioactivity were performed based on Kokubo's simulated body fluid to confirm the formation of the hydroxyapatite (HA) layer after immersion. In addition, the in vitro drug release behaviors were examined, using tetracycline as the therapeutic antibiotic in pH 7.4 and 5.0 environments. Finally, the results showed that BG microspheres of up to 33 µm could be mass-produced, targeting various therapeutic situations and their resulting bioactivities and drug release behaviors, and related properties were discussed.

POU domain, class 2, transcription factor 1 (POU2F1) is involved in the development of gastric cancer (GC). However, the molecular mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Here, we identified a novel lncRNA named TTC3-AS1 that was potentially regulated by POU2F1 and investigated their roles in GC progression. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that high expression of POU2F1 predicted poor prognosis in patients with GC. We further screened out an lncRNA TTC3-AS1 that may be transcriptionally activated by POU2F1 according to the JASPAR database, and POU2F1 and TTC3-AS1 were highly expressed in GC cells and tissues compared with normal controls (NCs). Function analysis revealed that both POU2F1 and TTC3-AS1 played oncogenic roles by promoting cell viability, migration, and invasion in GC. qRT-PCR analysis showed that POU2F1 improved the expression of TTC3-AS1 in GC cells, while TTC3-AS1 knockdown or overexpression had no effect on POU2F1 expression. The results of chromatin immunoprecipitation and DNA-affinity precipitation assays indicated that POU2F1 directly bound to the promoter region of TTC3-AS1 and activated its transcription. TTC3-AS1 knockdown neutralized the protumor effects of POU2F1 overexpression in GC cell lines as well as mouse models of GC, which suggested that TTC3-AS1 mediates the oncogenic function of POU2F1. In summary, POU2F1 promoted GC progression by transcriptionally activating TTC3-AS1; thus, this study provided a new perspective for the mechanism of GC progression.

The present study executed iron pentacarbonyl pyrolysis to synthesize one-dimensional structured carbonyl iron fibers (CIFs) via carrier gas induced flow. The obtained CIFs with a diameter of 100-300 nm and length-diameter ratio of more than 20, are actually composed of a large number of nanocrystalline aggregates. We investigated the dependence of the structure, morphology, and static magnetic and electromagnetic properties of the CIFs on the pyrolysis temperatures. CIFs synthesized at 300 °C (denoted as CIF-300) exhibited optimal microwave absorption properties dependent on the fiber structure and well-matched impedance. An optimal reflection loss of -58.1 dB was observed at 13.8 GHz with a matching thickness of 1.43 mm. Furthermore, CIF-300 presented a broad effective absorption bandwidth (RL ≤ -10 dB) of 5.66 GHz with a thickness of 1.44 mm, indicating that it could be applied in practical applications from 3.74 GHz to 18.0 GHz by tuning its thickness from 1.0 mm to 4.0 mm. This paper not only reveals that the CIFs synthesized at 300 °C have great potential application in microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) with thin thicknesses, wide absorption bandwidths, and strong absorption intensities, but also provides a simple approach to prepare metal fibers.

BACKGROUND: Long noncoding RNAs have been known to be involved in multiple types of malignancies, including invasive breast cancer (IBC). This study aimed to explore the role of long noncoding RNAs in IBC and elucidate the potential molecular mechanisms. METHODS: Using TCGA microarray data analysis, we identified a long noncoding RNA, MIR210HG, highly expressed in IBC. Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were used for survival analysis. The gain-of-function experiments were performed to assess the function of MIR210HG in IBC invasion and migration in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Bioinformatic analysis as well as luciferase reporter assay, rescue experiments and western blot assay revealed the mode of action of MIR210HG. RESULTS: The aberrantly enhanced MiR210HG expression predicted poor prognosis and lower survival rate. Knockdown of MiR210HG suppressed IBC cell invasion and metastasis both in vitro and in vivo. MiR-1226-3p was identified and validated to be the target miRNA of MiR210HG. Furthermore, MiR210HG functions as a competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) which sponges miR-1226-3p, therefore upregulates the expression of mucin1 (MUC1-C). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that MiR210HG sponges miR-1226-3p to facilitate invasive breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis by regulating mucin-1c and EMT pathway, revealing the oncogenic role of MiR210HG in IBC cells.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an established treatment for high surgical risk aortic stenosis patients; in recent years, it has also been used in patients with pure/dominant aortic regurgitation (AR). This study aimed to determine the impact of transapical TAVI on left ventricle myocardial mechanics in AR patients. Thirty AR patients (70% men; mean age, 72.8 ± 4.3 years) were enrolled. Conventional echocardiography was performed on all patients before and 12 months after TAVI. Three-dimensional speckle tracking was accomplished in 20 AR patients for the evaluation of global longitudinal strain, global circumferential strain, twist, torsion, apical rotation and basal rotation. Preoperative left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), global longitudinal strain (GLS), global circumferential strain (GCS), twist, torsion and apical rotation were impaired in AR patients compared with controls. Mean left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic diameter (from 62.9 ± 7.3 to 52.0 ± 6.8 mm, p < 0.001), LV end-diastolic volume (from 199.4 ± 55.0 to 130.1 ± 48.9 mL, p < 0.001), and LV mass index (179.8 ± 52.2-134.4 ± 42.5 g/m2, p = 0.001) decreased 12 months after TAVI. Interestingly, GLS (from - 17.2 ± 3.2 to - 18.9 ± 3.7, p = 0.007) and GCS (from - 23.9 ± 4.9 to - 25.7 ± 5.0, p = 0.008) improved significantly, but LVEF did not significantly improve. In terms of the rotational mechanics, twist, rotation and basal rotation remained almost unchanged, whereas apical rotation (from 7.4 ± 4.0 to 5.5 ± 3.9, p = 0.009) was significantly impaired after transapical TAVI. Our results indicate that LV function was improved in terms of myocardial deformation but worsened in terms of apical rotation 12 months after TAVI in AR patients. Three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography appears to be a sensitive method for detecting subtle cardiac remodeling after TAVI.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the hemodynamic characteristics of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. METHODS: Twenty patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and 15 patients with persistent atrial fibrillation enrolled in this study,while 12 patients with sinus rhythms served as controls. The hemodynamic characteristics of the patients in left atrial appendage were measured by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and vector flow mapping (VFM) using indicators such as vectors,vortex and energy loss (EL). RESULTS: ① Significant differences appeared between the patients with atrial fibrillation and the controls in heart rate,size of left atrium,size of left atrial appendage (LAA),and velocities of LAA filling and emptying. ② Regular vectors in LAA in early systole and late diastole were found in the patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and the controls; whereas,irregular vectors with direction alternating were visualized in the whole cardiac cycle in the patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. ③ Small vortexes were observed at the opening of the left atrial appendage in late diastole in the patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and the controls. ④ Peak EL values occurred in early systole and late diastole in the patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and the controls. But the patients with persistent atrial fibrillation had increased EL values over the whole cardiac cycle. CONCLUSION: VFM can visualize and quantify the hemodynamics of LAA in patients with different heart rhythms. It may provide a new method for assessing atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of echocardiography in pre-procedural,peri-procedural and post-procedural stages of transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients with aortic regurgitation (AR). METHODS: 31 patients with pure/dominant AR at a high risk on surgery were enrolled in this study. The degree of their aortic regurgitation was evaluated before TAVI,as well as the related diameters of aortic root and the left ventricular systolic function measured by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). TEE was used to reevaluate the valve pathology after general anesthesia. TEE in combination with fluoroscopy provided accurate position of the prosthetic valve for implantation. TEE was also used to monitor complications and to evaluate immediate post-procedure paravalvular regurgitation. The post TAVI follow-up included valve heamodynamic status,complications,left ventricular systolic function and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) measured by TEE. RESULTS: Transapical TAVI was successful in 29 of the 31 patients: 23 experienced no or little paravalvular regurgitation; 6 had mild paravalvular regurgitation. The left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) of the patients decreased significantly one week after TAVI,which progressed until one month later ( P<0.05) . The left ventricular ejection (EF) of the patients also decreased one week after TAVI ( P<0.05) ,but it resumed to the pre-procedural level one month later. CONCLUSION: Transapical TAVI is a potentially safe and effective therapy for patients with pure/dominant AR at a high risk on open-heart surgery. Echocardiography plays an important role in pre-procedural evaluation,peri-procedural monitoring and post-procedural follow-up in TAVI.

In order to understand the physical properties of materials it is necessary to determine the 3D positions of all atoms. There has been significant progress towards this goal using electron tomography. However, this method requires a relatively high electron dose and often extended acquisition times which precludes the study of structural dynamics such as defect formation and evolution. In this work we describe a method that enables the determination of 3D atomic positions with high precision from single high resolution electron microscopic images of graphene that show dynamic processes. We have applied this to the study of electron beam induced defect coalescence and to long range rippling in graphene. The latter strongly influences the mechanical and electronic properties of this material that are important for possible future applications.

The PIM family of serine/threonine kinases have become an attractive target for anti-cancer drug development, particularly for certain hematological malignancies. Here, we describe the discovery of a series of inhibitors of the PIM kinase family using a high throughput screening strategy. Through a combination of molecular modeling and optimization studies, the intrinsic potencies and molecular properties of this series of compounds was significantly improved. An excellent pan-PIM isoform inhibition profile was observed across the series, while optimized examples show good selectivity over other kinases. Two PIM-expressing leukemic cancer cell lines, MV4-11 and K562, were employed to evaluate the in vitro anti-proliferative effects of selected inhibitors. Encouraging activities were observed for many examples, with the best example (44) giving an IC50 of 0.75µM against the K562 cell line. These data provide a promising starting point for further development of this series as a new cancer therapy through PIM kinase inhibition.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Our study was conducted to further investigate the model of social support and care for People Living with HIV/AIDS(PLHA), to explore their role in People Living with AIDS's quality of life (QOL) as reference for improving nursing policies for AIDS. BACKGROUND: Social support and care are the most important factors impacting the QOL of People Living with HIV/AIDS, but most studies conducted upon the influence of social support and QOL of People Living with HIV/AIDS are mainly based on cross-sectional design. DESIGN: Our study was a nonrandomised controlled community intervention study. METHODS: The participants diagnosed as People Living with HIV/AIDS at Beijing You An Hospital received a comprehensive social support care from December 2013 to December 2014. To evaluate the impact of social support and care model on People Living with HIV/AIDS, our study analysed the different dimension scores of social support scale and quality of life before and after the intervention. Correlation between the net benefit value of social support and that of QOL from various dimensions were analysed. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the score of objective support and usage of support (all p = 0·02) for social support. Net values of objective support score and usage of support were 0·25 and 0·19, respectively, after intervention. There were significant differences in physiological function, role physical, general health, vitality, social function, mental health, health transition and total score of quality of life (all p < 0·05). The canonical correlation analysis of net values of social support and QOL indicated that the first and second canonical correlation were statistically significant, with correlation coefficients of 0·53 (p = 0·00) and 0·21 (p = 0·04). CONCLUSION: Social support and care intervention model can effectively improve perceived subjective feeling on social support and QOL condition for People Living with HIV/AIDS. And strategies to improve social support and care intervention programmes are strongly encouraged. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The method is simple and cost-effective and could be a way to improve the quality of life condition for People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Long-lived radioactive krypton isotopes, (81)Kr (t1/2 = 229,000 year) and (85)Kr (t1/2 = 10.76 year), are ideal tracers. (81)Kr is cosmogenic and can be used for dating groundwater beyond the (14)C age. (85)Kr is a fission product and can be applied in atmospheric studies, nuclear safety inspections, and dating young groundwater. It has long been a challenge to analyze radio-krypton in small samples, in which the total number of such isotopes can be as low as 1 × 10(5). This work presents a system developed to analyze (81)Kr and (85)Kr from a few liters of air samples. A separation system based on cryogenic distillation and gas chromatographic separation is used to extract krypton gas with an efficiency of over 90% from air samples of 1-50 L. (85)Kr/Kr and (81)Kr/Kr ratios in krypton gases are determined from single-atom counting using a laser-based atom trap. In order to test the performance of the system, we have analyzed various samples collected from ambient air and extracted from groundwater, with a minimum size of 1 L. The system can be applied to analyze (81)Kr and (85)Kr in environmental samples including air, groundwater, and ices.

Five xanthones, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydroxyxanthone (1) and bracteaxanthones III-VI (2-5) together with twenty-six known compounds (6-31), were isolated from the ethanol extract of the stem bark of Garcinia bracteata. Their structures were elucidated via spectroscopic analyses. Growth inhibitory activities of these compounds against the human leukaemic HL-60 cell line were measured in vitro. Compounds 7, 11, and 29 exhibited moderate activities with GI(50) values of 2.8, 3.4, and 3.1 µM, respectively, and a preliminary structure-activity relationship is discussed.

Oxidative cleavage of internal double bonds in polycyclic systems can give access to compounds containing medium- to large-sized rings. In this example, the nine- and ten-membered ring containing compounds that resulted from the mCPBA-mediated (mCPBA=meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid) oxidative cleavage reaction were shown to exhibit atropisomerism. The reaction of the polycyclic system with catalytic amounts of ruthenium tetraoxide followed by diol cleavage achieved the same synthetic goal. Use of the Nishiyama-Beller ruthenium-based catalysts enabled the synthesis of optically-enriched samples, providing the first example of an atropselective oxidative cleavage reaction.

The objective of the study was to explore the pathogenesis of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and the mechanism of valproate administration in the early stage of MTLE development. We performed a global comparative analysis and function classification of differentially expressed proteins using proteomics. MTLE models of developmental rats were induced by lithium-pilocarpine. Proteins in the hippocampus were separated by 2-DE technology. PDQuest software was used to analyze 2-DE images, and MALDI-TOF-MS was used to identify the differentially expressed proteins. Western blot was used to determine the differential expression levels of synapse-related proteins synapsin-1, dynamin-1 and neurogranin in both MTLE rat and human hippocampus. A total of 48 differentially expressed proteins were identified between spontaneous and non-spontaneous MTLE rats, while 41 proteins between MTLE rats and post valproate-treatment rats were identified. All of the proteins can be categorized into several groups by biological functions: synaptic and neurotransmitter release, cytoskeletal structure and dynamics, cell junctions, energy metabolism and mitochondrial function, molecular chaperones, signal regulation and others. Western blot results were similar to the changes noted in 2-DE. The differentially expressed proteins, especially the proteins related to synaptic and neurotransmitter release function, such as synapsin-1, dynamin-1 and neurogranin, are probably involved in the mechanism of MTLE and the pharmacological effect of valproate. These findings may provide important clues to elucidate the mechanism of chronic MTLE and to identify an optimum medication intervention time and new biomarkers for the development of pharmacological therapies targeted at epilepsy.
